The men's and women's track teams ventured back to the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City this past weekend for the 2010 edition of the Great Dane Classic.
The women's team earned 37.50 points, good enough for a seventh-place finish out of the 25 teams that competed.
The men's team scored 57 total points and headed back from New York with a well dserved third-place finish out of 27 total teams.
On the women's side, sophomore sprinter Shericka Ward had a successful weekend, winning the 55-meter run in a blazing time of 7.90 seconds and posting a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter run with a time of 24.97.
For her efforts, Ward was named the Big East Female Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. This was the first time Ward has won a weekly honor and she becomes the first Villanova woman to receive a weekly conference award. She ranks second overall in the Big East standings thanks in part to her time of 8.43 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.
The women's team also scored three points in the 400-meter run with senior Makalia Griffith's sixth-place finish (56.95), six points with freshman Shannon Browne's third-place finish in the 1000-meter run (2:58.07) and eight points with junior Ashlyn Llerandi's second-place finish in the pole vault.
The men's team was carried by the distance crew, which scored 45 of the 57 points for the Wildcats. Junior Carl MacKenzie started things off on the right foot for the men's squad by out-kicking Albany's Nicolas Santos in the 1000-meter run in a time of 2:26.23, earning the Wildcats their first points of the weekend.
Sophomore Daniel Norman tacked on another point for the 'Cats in the one mile run with a time of 4:18.33, which was good enough for eighth place overall.
In the men's 3000-meter run, the vaunted Villanova lineup of junior Hugo Beamish, senior Robert Papazian and senior Daniel Lewis proved to be too much for the rest of the field to handle.
The Wildcats took first, second and third, with Beamish blazing the trail in a time of 8:16.97. It was 25 seconds before a runner from another school crossed the finish line.
