Men’s Basketball Program Pauses Following New COVID-19 Cases

On Sunday, December 27th, it was announced that the Villanova University Men’s Basketball team would be taking a temporary pause on the season due to two active cases of COVID-19. The positive cases were announced to be head coach, Jay Wright, and another member of the basketball team staff.

The athletics department made it clear that all guidelines are being followed, stating that Wright “is in isolation per CDC guidelines while experiencing mild symptoms.”

In a statement from Coach Wright in the athletic department’s press release, he shared that the team’s physician, Dr. Mike Duncan, has been providing information to the team to guide them through the current situation. Coach Wright also mentioned that the team is staying connected via phone and Zoom. At this time, no information is available about others who may have been considered to be a close contact.

With this temporary lapse of play for the team, the Big East Conference announced that the game scheduled for Saturday, January 2nd against Xavier has been postponed.

No decision has been made about the games currently scheduled on Tuesday, January 5th against DePaul and Friday, January 8th against Marquette.
