Nova on Pointe invites members from all dance backgrounds

Seeing all of the early action candidates this past weekend had me thinking back to my freshman year at Villanova. I distinctly remember scribbling my name onto each and every table set up at the clubs and activities fair. Each year, more clubs are added to the seemingly endless roster of activities on campus. These clubs give students the opportunity to find and refine their interests. One such club, Nova on Pointe is a relatively new organization founded by junior English major Caitlyn Dittmeier.

“As a life-long ballet dancer, I believe that ballet is a powerful art form that brings the music and dance worlds together, motivates, connects, and inspires people through movement, and fosters confidence, self-expression, and other values that we can take from the ballet barre to so many other areas of our live,” she said. “My goal in founding Nova on Pointe was to create a space for the Villanova community to explore ballet, since there was not an existing ballet club on campus when I arrived here as a freshman in 2015….I created this organization so that ballet dancers like myself could enjoy ballet as a fun and meaningful activity during their college experience at Villanova.”

Nova on Pointe is an all-inclusive club whose members range from “avid audience member, ballet beginner and life-long dancer.” Their presence extends beyond the studio as well. In addition to ballet classes, workshops and performances, Nova on Pointe participates in community outreach events and takes excursions to see professional ballets. In the future, Dittmeier hopes to build a repertoire that includes ballets like Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and La Bayadere, in addition to contemporary and original productions.

Nova on Pointe also hopes to supplement its classes by building a network of professional composers, choreographers and ballet dancers. “Shout to Misty Copeland if you’re interested in visiting us at Villanova!” for workshops, lectures and guest performances.

Classes are held in the St. Mary’s dance studio Thursdays from 5:30-7:00 p.m. and Fridays from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Make sure you check them out if for nothing more than “an excellent stress-reliever” before midterms, Vice President Caroline Brown said.
