'Castle' captivates

This year's One Book Villanova selection is a captivating memoir that follows author Jeannette Walls throughout her tumultuous childhood

Set over a period of several years, "The Glass Castle," - the '08-'09 selection for One Book Villanova - is a startling account of author Jeanette Walls' disjointed and sometimes scary childhood. The introduction alone is alluring enough, with a short tale of Walls being embarrassed to have lunch with her homeless mother. (0) comments

Controversial director Oliver Stone's latest film "W.," a unique reflection on the life and career of America's 43rd president George W. Bush, is surprising in several ways. It is surprising that the film humanizes its titular character rather than demonizing him. (1) comment

At the beginning of this year, "Body of Lies" was on nearly every critic's top 10 list of possible Academy Award contenders. With a stellar acting duo, renowned director and Oscar-winning screenwriter at the helm of a best-selling Iraq war drama, it was hard to bet against it. (0) comments

'Mad Men' worthy of recent praise

The Entertainment Blender

Going into the Emmys last month, I thought "Dexter" or "Lost" would take the Best Drama Emmy, even though all the critics said otherwise. When AMC's critically acclaimed but seldom-watched "Mad Men" won the Emmy, I finally caved and watched it from the beginning to see what all the fuss was about. (0) comments

After four successful years and two solid records, Ray LaMontagne proves that three times truly is the charm. His third studio release, "Gossip In the Grain," showcases his remarkable growth as both a singer and a song writer. With the success of his past two albums, LaMontagne made little effort to venture away from the dark beauty of his epic ballads. (0) comments

Britney finally 'stronger than yesterday'

Spears returns after rough couple of years, proving her true superstardom

Six years ago, a 20-year old midriff-bearing, chart-topping blonde phenomenon belted out, "I'm not a girl, not yet a woman." Britney Spears is certainly a woman now, and to say she has had a rough couple of years would be an understatement. After some questionable decisions and appearances (think her disastrous 2007 "Gimme More" performance at the VMAs), many wondered if the public was ever going to catch another glimpse of the sweet Southern girl who revolutionized pop music. "They have the best harmonies since the Beach Boys," remarked a surprised fan in the audience, and that fan was not alone in appreciating the live music of Fleet Foxes. On Oct. 2, Fleet Foxes headlined at the Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia in an inspiring performance from an up-and-coming band. (0) comments

Chris Cornell collaborates with Timbaland, Cook

To his fans' disappointment, former Soundgarden and Audioslave band member Cornell produces unsuccessful new album with Timbaland, writes songs for 'American Idol' winner David Cook

Nearly two decades ago, Chris Cornell and Soundgarden were at the head of the grunge era, and 1994's "Superunknown" established them as one of the most cutting-edge bands of the decade. Cornell's growling voice, unique lyrics and guitar skills were the backbone of the group. (4) comments

British filmmaker Anthony Minghella played a variety of roles throughout his 27-year career. While he may be best known for writing and directing the 1996 Oscar-winner "The English Patient," Minghella's subsequent work proved that he was just as comfortable in the producer's office as he was in the director's chair. A lone black vinyl chair sits in the middle of a small stage. Behind it, a window glows with the blue-and-red light of the Milkboy sign. Completing the simplistic stage: a silver pail adorned with a scribbled note reading "tip jar." This modest setting is the home to a new feature at Bryn Mawr's MilkBoy Acoustic Café, the comedy show "Last Laughs" held on the last Monday of each month. (0) comments
