California native Dorian Wells is a member of Villanova's stellar football program. As a receiver, Wells exudes talent and potential on the field as a red-shirted sophomore, but his abilities don't end there.
For the past nine years, Wells has been writing his own music. What started in seventh grade as a hobby soon developed into a passion. By his sophomore year of high school, Wells began rapping his own lyrics and adopted the stage name that he is commonly known as, "Dwells."
His inspirations range from the professional rap industry to his family at home.
"My mom is my muse, my inspiration," Wells says. "She's one of my biggest fans."
Wells is also inspired by famous artists such as Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Wiz Khalifa.
Other inspiration for Wells include life experience, success and love. He says that his favorite things to write and rap about are the things that make him happy.
"Anything that comes to mind, I just put it down on paper and see what I can do with it," he says. "I just love music. It has always been a constant thing in my life."
Wells wrote and produced his current mixtape out of his own dorm room. "The Official Andheswells Mixtape" was released in April 2010 and has already developed a huge fan base, especially throughout the Villanova community.
To promote his music, Wells says he relies heavily on the Internet.
"Social networks like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace have all aided in the promotion of my mixtape and individual songs as well," he says. "They also allow fans and listeners to give me feedback on my music, which is always something I'm looking for."
Wells has performed live to promote his music. He's done a total of three shows, two in Philadelphia and one in his home state of California. Wells says that he loves the atmosphere of live shows and always enjoys performing. He's never performed on Villanova's campus or for any Villanova event but says it's a goal of his before he graduates.
Like most artists, Wells desires the spotlight of the professional world.
"I want to entertain people and make people happy," he says.
So what's the next step for this rapper-in-the-making?
"We're starting a movement," Wells says.
